Sub-ambient radiative cooling under tropical climate using highly reflective polymeric coating

While passive radiative cooling has shown great potential in temperate regions lowering surface temperatures, its performance under tropical climate that is characterised by high solar irradiance and humidity still lacks exploration. Herein, we adopt a highly reflective polymeric coating with BaSO4 particles dispersed P(VdF-HFP) matrix for the tropics. Through strong Mie scattering of sunlight intrinsic bond vibration, substrate-independent average reflectance infrared emittance within 8–13 ?m atmospheric window could reach 97% 94.2%, respectively. For first time, surfaces maintain sub-ambient temperatures direct exposure to sky surroundings even when intensity was 1000 W/m2 downwelling radiation 480 W/m2, while separately achieving 2 °C below ambient during night-time an effective power 54.4 W/m2. With scalable fabrication-process, our cost-effective single-layer can be easily applied diverse substrates, which suitable real-world applications
